Having established a sound understanding of what Jesus meant by the elements of the Lord's Prayer, let's move on to what constitutes...
If this can be determined and implemented surely we can become a more "powerful" church. Using the Lord's Prayer and two significant Scriptures (one Old Testament and one New Testament) as models, having reviewed every passage of Scripture dealing with prayer and with the leading of the Holy Spirit, I am confident that TRUE AND COMPLETE PRAYER has four components:
Attitude - Compassion - Truth - Standing ( A-C-T-S ).
Let me commence by quoting the O.T and N.T Scriptures:
2 Chr. 7: 13 - 16 "When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there".
Acts 2: 38 "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'."
The setting of the O.T. Scripture is Solomon's dedication of the temple. The setting of the N.T. Scripture is the Day of Pentecost and Peter's response to the question, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Please see here that Peter's reply describes the N.T. DEDICATION OF THE TEMPLE.
There is one other point that is significant. We must have a perspective of the natural and the supernatural. We all know that God exists outside the natural realm (ie outside the realm which He created). HOW DO WE KNOW THIS? . . . God has demonstrated SUPERNATURAL acts . . . what we typically call "the miraculous". Without getting into a long discussion here, if all acts which we see as miraculous were to become "the normal" or "the natural", then there would be nothing to SHOW the supernatural. God has placed "His (natural) laws" into the natural realm. When I drop something it always falls downward (the law of gravity). If I drop something and it goes up, "a power" contrary to natural law is demonstrated (this is the supernatural or miraculous). The understanding of this paragraph has relevance in other areas of study but in regards to prayer may we offer the following: The process of prayer which we will describe may be seen as the "natural order of prayer". However, there is also the "supernatural order of prayer". The supernatural BREAKS THE RULES of the natural, which is really what the supernatural must do in order to be supernatural. When we see prayer answered without ALL the natural requirements being met, the supernatural is at work. With that established, let's look at the natural order of prayer.
